Today feels like the right day to look back and remember one of the greatest horses of my life. It has been two years since we had to say our final goodbye to KV Stormlost Charley.
On his last months Charley suffered from severe joint pain, something I was prepared for by my mother, the equine osteopath when we bought the horse. I told her that if I can keep him sound even some years, it will be worth it. And it was.
We sought help from multiple veterinarians and utilized the most advanced treatments available in Finland and abroad, but eventually, the medicine could no longer keep up with his spirit. On a biting cold, frosty morning two years ago, I had to let go of a piece of my heart.
Born in a Storm, Gone in a Storm
Charley’s breeder, Kari Vepsä, once told me that Charley was born in the middle of a fierce storm. It felt like a strange, bittersweet twist of fate that his life ended during a sudden, unexpected snowstorm on that freezing morning. He came into this world with the wind howling, and he left it the same way.
The Horse Who Healed Me
As a partner, Charley gave me everything. He was the one who pulled me up from the depths after my return from Belgium. When I was recovering from a back injury and wasn't physically at my best, Charley protected me. He lived alongside me with such safety and respect, instinctively knowing I was fragile.
When we eventually returned to the show rings, he was my rock. I can still remember the feeling of him breathing calmly beside me, as if he were whispering: "Relax now. I’ve got this."
Breaking Chains Together
I believe our journey was just as transformative for him as it was for me. With us, Charley found the courage to try more, to reach higher, and to give his whole heart. He made me feel like we were the best in the world, even if we were "only" competing in small Finnish shows.

Our final performance together is a memory I will cherish forever. At HIHS (Helsinki International Horse Show) 2023, we stood before a packed arena to demonstrate the beauty of Reining. Charley performed magnificently—he truly shone. Deep down, I knew that day that it would be our final curtain call.
A Legacy of Respect
It is heartbreaking to give up a piece of pure gold, but it is the final act of love to understand when it is time to say goodbye. Charley didn't just touch my life; he touched my entire family and our whole stable community.
He was a "great man" with a massive heart. He possessed a natural authority that was quiet yet undeniable—even the biggest, strongest stallions would step back in their stalls with respect when this dark bay gelding with great mane walked through the aisle. Only the truly great ones earn that kind of universal respect.

Thank you for everything, Charley. I miss you still, every single day.
